To help new pet parents, Dr. Charlie Astle, a veterinarian and pet welfare expert, shared important tips in a recent post on her Instagram profile. Check it out:
1. Do your research
Research different breeds or species to find out which one best suits you and your lifestyle. Consider factors such as size, energy level, hygiene requirements, and temperament.
2. Prepare your home
Make your home pet-proof by removing any hazards such as toxic plants, small objects that could be swallowed, electrical cords, and chemicals out of your pet’s reach.
3. Establish a routine
Set a consistent schedule for feeding, bathroom breaks, exercise, and training. Routine helps pets feel secure and aids in their training and behavior.
4. Socialization and training
It’s important to socialize your pet from an early age with people, animals, and various environments. Basic obedience training is also essential to teach good manners.
5. Healthcare
Schedule a visit to the veterinarian for a health check-up, vaccinations, and to discuss spaying/neutering. Remember to schedule regular veterinary check-ups, keep vaccinations up to date, control parasites, and of course, ensure dental care for your pet.
6. Proper nutrition
Feed your pet a balanced diet suitable for its age, size, and species. Avoid feeding leftovers or harmful foods and always provide fresh water.
7. Physical exercise
Provide regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior. Create fun games to play with your pet, take walks, and provide puzzle toys for enrichment.
8. Hygiene
Establish a hygiene routine based on your pet’s needs, including brushing, bathing, nail trimming, and dental care. Regular hygiene helps maintain health and strengthens the bond between pet and owner.
9. Prepare for emergencies
Have a pet first aid kit ready and know basic first aid procedures in case of emergencies. Additionally, keep important documents (such as health records) handy and have an emergency plan in place.
